Betaferon is a glycoprotein of the interferon group, belonging to the cytokine family. These are naturally occurring proteins produced biotechnologically for therapeutic use. The use of proteins is considered to pose insignificant environmental risk. According to the EMA guideline (EMEA/CHMP/SWP/4777/00), substances such as vitamins, electrolytes, amino acids, peptides, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vaccines, and herbal medicinal products are exempt from environmental risk assessment as they are unlikely to pose significant environmental risk.
